Hiking in the Zádiel Gorge and Surroundings: A Weekend in the Embrace of Nature
Last weekend, we had the opportunity to explore one of Slovakia's most beautiful natural treasures, the Zádiel Gorge (Zádielska tiesňava), as well as the nearby Háj Valley waterfalls (Hájske vodopády). These two days provided a refreshing escape into the fresh air and stunning sights. In this post, I’ll share our experiences and some interesting facts about these locations.
Day One: Hiking in the Zádiel Gorge
We started our first day in the famous Zádiel Gorge, which is part of the Slovak Karst (Slovenský kras). Over millions of years, the Blatnica Stream carved the gorge, constantly shaping the valley as it flowed through the limestone cliffs. The gorge’s towering walls, reaching up to 300 meters in some places, provide a breathtaking view, making the area a true geological wonder.
The trail follows the stream along the valley, allowing us to enjoy the soft murmur of the water and the fresh, forest air. The hike isn't too difficult, though towards the end, as we began ascending to the top of the gorge, there were a few steeper sections. But the effort was well worth it—the view from the top was simply indescribable. The panorama of the deep gorge and the surrounding cliffs was nothing short of spectacular.
For nature photography enthusiasts, this spot is a dream come true. Every angle offers unique opportunities to capture the awe-inspiring work of nature’s forces.
Day Two: Háj Valley Waterfalls and Hrhov
The Hrhov waterfall is an easily accessible but lesser-known tourist attraction. In recent years, it has gained more attention, but it has still retained its calm and idyllic atmosphere.
Our Accommodation:
"The 100-year-old guesthouse" in Bódvaszilas was an excellent choice for a nature-filled retreat during our weekend trip. What captured us was not only its historical charm but also its perfect location as a starting point for exploring the surrounding area.
The guesthouse is situated in one of the most picturesque villages of the Gömör–Torna Karst region, at the quiet end of Bódvaszilas, towards Miskolc. Built in 1909, the house is one of the so-called "American-style estates," funded by the owner who amassed wealth overseas. It stands as an architectural gem of the region.
The front part of the building now serves as the Szilasi Open-Air Museum, while the guest rooms have been developed from the former pantry and stable, remodeled to meet modern needs. Since 2007, the guesthouse has welcomed visitors seeking a peaceful, nature-oriented getaway.
If you’re looking for an authentic rural experience where the charm of the past meets the tranquility of nature, and you want to enjoy it at a budget-friendly price, this accommodation is definitely worth considering.
Conclusion
The Zádiel Gorge hike and the exploration of the surrounding area offer a perfect weekend getaway for anyone who loves being close to nature and enjoying breathtaking landscapes. Whether you prefer a gentle hike through the gorge or admiring the beauty of waterfalls, this region has something for everyone.
If you haven’t been here yet, make sure to add it to your bucket list because you're guaranteed to return with unforgettable memories!
